Committee to consider special pay scale for cops

Police Chief N.K.Illangakoon has appointed a five member committee to look into demands by police personnel for a special system of salaries for those employed by the Department.

In a circular issued on September 15, the committee which is headed by Senior DIG Gamini Nawaratna, asked those in the Department to make submissions by September 25, 2011 on how such a system can be implemented. The call for a special system of paying salaries to police personnel has come about due to the nature of their work which includes being on duty 24 hours a day, being on duty during holidays as well as the risks involved in their work.

Under an administrative service circular they are paid at present on par with public servants, but no consideration has been given to the special nature of their work in fixing their salary scales.
