News with Susanthika Jayasinghe’s name often is involved with events related to the field of sports. But this time Susanthika hit the headlines for a different reason over her latest achievement.

It was a day of celebrations for this sprint queen of Asia who brought fame to Mother Lanka with the birth of her son last Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Colombo.

In Susanthika’s own words it is the ‘greatest achievement’ of all the successes she has had so far in her life.

“It feels so good to attain motherhood and I have no words to explain the feeling that you get when you become a mother. When I first saw the baby and heard him cry, it brought tears into my eyes. Although I was in pain for a moment I started to imagine what my mother would have felt immediately after giving birth to me.

There is nothing to beat the motherhood or mother’s love as it is a blend of emotions such as love, pain and affection,” Susanthika told The Sunday Times referring to her bundle of joy as the most ‘precious medal’ that she has ever got.

Asked how much she looked forward to the birth of her baby Susanthika said it is natural for any expecting mother to deviate from her usual pattern of life and as such Susanthika was no exception.
“You always tend to think of the baby -- you become very mindful about the food you eat, how you dress, the things you say etc. The feeling that whatever you do will affect your baby predominates your mind throughout where as when you take part in a game your only ambition is to run and win, Motherhood makes you a totally different person,” she added.

According to her, this change is visible in her husband too. “Dhammika has also become very responsible and committed. He says that he feels very sad to hear the baby cry and tries to put him to sleep. Even at nights when he goes to sleep he always imagines as if the baby is awake and crying,” says a proud Susanthika.

When asked what the child’s name was going to be the Athnewela sprint queen said “So far we have not decided what his name is but, Dhammika is looking around for books that contain children’s names.”

About her future plans for the baby Susanthika says time is the deciding factor of the future of the baby and that it is difficult for her to decide if he would become a doctor, engineer, athlete or a pilot.
Asked in what capacity she would get involved in the field of sports, this Olympic medallist Susanthika said she would definitely contribute to the betterment of the country in whatever the way it is possible in the future after the baby reaches a certain age.
