Every morning, you drag yourself out of bed, at the crack of dawn or after a long tiring day at work. You put on your running shoes. Then slowly progress to walk to the grounds. And the jogging begins. Round after round you tell yourself, “One more to go! You can do it!” But you are bored out of your mind because it is the same old routine, every single day.

Or are you tired of the same old monotonous workout at the gym? Or looking for a new way of spending your free time? You might be health conscious or your doctor may have advised you to shed a few pounds due to health reasons… And then you think, “What are my options?”

Well, there are actually plenty to be found and this is our possible contribution towards your list of options…

This week we will have a closer look at a few basic details of squash, a sport that can be played either in singles or doubles. And in fact if your friends are not keen on joining you, you always have the option of playing with your coach.

“It is a sport that gives a full body work out, which will help you to both lose weight and be healthy, unlike other sports this will result in minimum injuries,” said V. S. M. Chandana, who currently coaches the squash teams of Royal college, D. S Senanayake Vidyalaya and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya.
There is no age limit to get into the sport, “Anyone from the age of eight to 50 years can start the sport. Development will depend on the individual,” he says.

This is definitely one of the games that will help you sweat it out as it involves a lot of activity. Chandana insists that the game is far from being monotonous and boring as it is considered as a fast sport. “The player will be constantly running around the court to get a shot at the ball and invariably he would have run quite a distance without him or her realising it.”

This would mean that who ever takes it up will burn calories due to the strenuous work. He advised that if anyone is interested in taking up squash he should play it at least twice a week for a minimum of half an hour to one hour to get the best results.

Lessons are usually an hour long and one can get in contact with a coach through a squash club at your convenience. You will need to book a squash court in advance which will cost you around rupees 250 per hour. A beginner will also need a squash racket which will cost rupees 2300 upwards and non mark shoes which can be bought for a minimum of rupees 2000 upwards.

With the racket and the shoes on you are ready for one hour of a very intensive work out. Have Fun!
