Trinity and Mahamaya top the list

Trinity College with 310 points and Mahamaya College with 245 points topped the respective men’s and women’s team rankings at the picturesque Hillwood College, Kandy pool in the Short Course Swimming Championship 2009, held in Kandy.

This year’s meet was held from April 2 – 4, 2009, where 44 events in total are conducted in a 25 metre pool. These events include all the Olympic Events, which consist of the Dolphin, Back, Breast and Freestyle. At the end of three days the final Team Rankings were as follows:

Women: 1.Mahamaya College – 245, 2. Visakha Vidyalaya – 174, 3. St. Bridget’s Convent – 155, 4. Musaeus College – 153, 5. Hillwood College, Kandy – 73, Total 1063.00

Men: 1. Trinity College, Kandy – 310, 2. St. Joseph’s College – 238, 3. Ananda College – 226, 4. Sri Lanka Navy – 87, 5. Royal College – 58, Total 1098.00

The enthusiastic and energetic crowd cheered their schools on while a number of records were broken at the meet. In the men’s and women’s categories.

Heshan Unamboowe of Trinity College, Kandy set new records in the 100 metre Individual Medley with a timing of 1:00.31 as well as in the 100 metre Freestyle with a timing of 53.58. Ananda College’s Diluka Thibbotumunuwe set a new record of 2:36.75 in the 200 metre Breast Stroke, while K. Hulangamuwe also of Trinity College Kandy set a new record of 2:18.70 in the 200 metres Butterfly.

For the women, Udara Cumaratunga of Visakha Vidyalaya, set a record of 2:40.83 in the 200 metres Back Stroke. While Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International College, Kandy set a new record in the 200 metres Butterfly with a timing of 2:32.43. The meet concluded with Miniruwani Samarakoon (Gateway International School, Kandy) and Heshan Unamboowe (Trinity College, Kandy) scoring the highest points for the girls and the guys with 25 points each.
