Confusion as Match Referee awards game to St. Sylvester’s

Utter confusion prevailed during the last stages of the 51st Big Match between Vidyartha and St. Sylvester’s as the Match Referee Bernard Perera decided to award the win to the Sylvestrians because their opponents refused to take the field after a stoppage for bad light.

When the match was stopped, the winners needed to get only 10 more runs with nine overs left.
Sylvestrian skipper Chanaka Colombage (11.5-6-7-5) made it all possible as he spun out the Vidyartha batsmen in the second innings.

Vidyartha’s captain Sameera Abeyratne (59 and 3 wickets) had a good game. Vidyartha squandered a first innings lead of 62 runs with some feeble batting.

Vidyartha 171 for 9 dec in 75.3 overs (S. Abeyratne 59, L. Herath 50 n.o, D. Gangoda 24; Sachith Alwis 3 for 38, D. Athauda 3 for 20, N. Nilantha 2 for 13) and 54 for 8 dec in 26.5 overs (K. Wijekoon 12, D. Gunatilleke 15; D. Athauda 2 for 16, C. Colombage 5 for 7)
