History of Mowbray College

Mowbray was opened as an English school by the Ceylon church Missionary Society In 1922, however the history goes back to 1911 when Miss. Earp arrived from South Africa and chose Mowbray as her mission centre for evangelistic work, among the Tamil women of Kandy and its neighbourhood. In 1914 Miss. Denier, also from South Africa joined her and both ladies having come from “Mowbray”, a C.M.S centre in South Africa, named this school as Mowbray. The missionary ladies held their Bible women’s training classes and meetings. The promising girls were sent out to be trained as nurses, midwives, and primary school teachers. It was on May 17, 1922 that Mowbray College was opened as an elementary English Boarding School for Tamil girls. Miss. Howes was the first principal on the opening day with 27 pupils. The staff consisted of three teachers a matron and a nurse.
