Institute of Chemistry Ceylon organised the Inter University Chemistry Magic Competition on May 25, as one of its chemistry popularisation programmes for the year 2022, where the team from University of Colombo won the championship.

University of Peradeniya, and College of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon secured the second and third places respectively. This competition was organised for the first time.  Professor Sriyanthi Deraniyagala, President Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the virtual magic competition mentioned about the programmes planned for the chemistry popularisation by the Institute of chemistry Ceylon as the professional organisation of chemists in Sri Lanka. The year plan includes popular lectures, debate and magic competitions, interviews with eminent scientists etc.

Chemistry magic is based on some interesting chemical reactions which produce bright colours, smoke, light etc during their occurrence. Unlike general magic the theoretical basis for the chemistry magic can be explained.

Chemistry is considered as the central subject among the natural sciences and its applications are widespread in the fields including medicine, engineering, agriculture, biology and many other technological areas such as nanotechnology.

The contribution from chemistry to the national development is immense. Such contributions can greatly support the country to overcome the economic crisis we face today. Therefore it is important to attract our young generation to study chemistry to strengthen the scientific development of the country.

Dr. Sisira Weliwegama,

Senior Lecturer,
