Education Minister seeks Auditor General’s report on student admissions

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha has called for a report from the Auditor General regarding the list of some 500 students whose admission to intermediary classes to national schools was put on hold.

The report is being called in view of the violation of circulars issued by the Education Ministry which has resulted in the overcrowding of classes, Minister Premajayantha said. He said some 35 national schools are the worst affected.

The registrations of the students had been held back until the report from the Auditor General was received.

“All related details including the list of students and the class room situation of each class have been sent to the Auditor General,” he said.

Depending on the report from the Auditor General the Ministry would be taking a decision about the students. The intermediary classes are grade two, three, four, six, seven eight and nine.

Last week the Education Times reported that the list was suspended after taking into consideration a complaint by the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service Professional Association (SLEASPA).

The Association had complained that the former Education Secretary Kapila Perera had back dated and issued the letters of admissions after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa announced his resignation and the Cabinet was dissolved.

But Prof. Perera denied the allegation and said the selections done were on request either at ministerial level or at official level.

“I do not know any of these people personally,” he said, in reference to the people who had requested for students to be admitted to intermediary classes.
