School vehicles hit by fuel crisis

Transporting of school children will not be possible from tomorrow due to the present fuel crisis, warned private school transport services.

All Island School Children Transportation Association President Mal Sri de Silva said about 48,000 school van and school bus owners and drivers are facing difficulties due to the shortage of fuel.

“We request the government to instruct filling stations to give priority to those who have the All-Island School Children Transportation Association’s membership card. We have to be on time to drop and pick children and cannot wait in queues for hours,” he said.

Mr. de Silva said parents will be compelled to pay a higher school van or school bus fees this time due to the fuel shortage, increased prices of vehicle spare parts and the government’s failure to provide financial relief for school van and school bus drivers.

“It’s unfortunate if children, who lost school time due to COVID have to go through a similar situation again, due to the fuel shortage,” he added.
