Prime Minister instructed Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow to facilitate students to come home by via Russia

Measures are being taken to facilitate the temporary voluntary return of Sri Lankan students in Gomel State Medical University and Grodno State Medical University in Belarus, an official from the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

The Ministry said it is working with the Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow to ensure the safe return of Sri Lankan students.

Students who wish to return temporarily from the above two universities are requested to contact the Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow immediately.

The Ministry also requested Sri Lankan students who are entering the territory of border countries to have valid passports and travel documents, identification documents such as birth certificates, and passport copies with them.

Students are advised to carry adequate supplies of food, water and medicines due to long waiting times at the border.

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry will continue to update the families of Sri Lankan students on the safety and status of evacuation of their children,” the ministry official said.

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Moscow which is concurrently accredited to Belarus continues to be in communication with 1,556 students studying in more than eight universities and higher education institutes in Belarus.

“Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Moscow is in direct contact with the relevant university authorities, student and parent groups, as well as other concerned institutions in Belarus, with regard to the safety and welfare of the Sri Lankan students.  Regular status updates are being provided to the parents, as deemed necessary,” the ministry official said.

The Foreign Ministry is also engaged in monitoring the status of Sri Lankan nationals in countries which share land borders with Ukraine.

Following a request by parents of students in Belarusian universities and higher education institutes, this week Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed the embassy to negotiate with the relevant universities to postpone courses for a few weeks and to facilitate the students to come back to Sri Lanka by taking visas to enter Russia.
