It takes courage to become who you really are…

The greatest and most important adventure of our lives is discovering who we really are. Yet so many of us walk around either not really knowing or listening to an awful inner critic that gives us all the wrong ideas about ourselves. We mistakenly think of self-understanding as self-indulgence, and we carry on without asking the most important question we’ll ever ask: Who am I really? As Mary Oliver put it, “what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Some may refer to this as “what’s your true calling in life”. It also boils down to the same point which in the end asks, what’s the aim of your life. This also be referred to as the Purpose of your life. Finding one’s true calling or purpose has a lot to do with a dialogue that needs to take place with one’s feelings and true self. You are the only one who knows who you really are. Not even your parents would not know who you really are. Hence, it’s worth paying attention to your true self.

Once it’s figured and once you know what you are made of, it’s then about trying to live your life along with the realisation of who you really are. The society that we live today wouldn’t let you be or rather will adjust yourself to suit the occasions. This will create a self-duality which will in the end create a fusion of who you really are.

Whether we like it or not, our lives are spent with two ends. First, what we assume to be true or what we value and what others assume to be true or what others want us to live by. This could be depicted as follow.

We are at times compelled to do what is right to us as well as to others. For instance, we would end up joining hands with someone else’s religious work, which we may also feel right of being a part of it.

At times you will end up committing yourself to do something which looks wrong according to your value system but will be valued by someone else. For example, your friend might invite you to go out tonight, but it wouldn’t be in line with your   value system. However, you will end up joining your friend which will give you a negative outcome. It’s only after having a negative impact or an outcome you would tend to look at it from an objective point of view.

In the same way, what may look right to you may not look right to others. You might want to believe in universal powers, but your friends may not believe in them hence will never honour your request to connect with them.

There are things that we do at times which are wrong to us and to others both still we end up getting involved. Alcohol, tobacco, to many other things and the list can go on.

What is the issue?

The issue is irrespective of which quadrant it falls under, depending on the circumstances we might end up committing ourselves in performing certain acts. Invariably these acts would fall under one of the above four. This would make a confusion in our inner sense; leaving us with a question who we really are… based on what actions we take or what circumstances we go through, at times we tend to define who we are. But in reality, we are not what are committed for. We really could be much greater than who we think we are. Therefore, in order for us to figure what we truly are, it’s recommended to self-isolate yourself from the society once in a while and deep dive into your inner soul to question; am I doing what I’m supposed to be doing? Am I what I should be?

Why it’s important?

Listening to your own self and watching back at your own acts would always pave way for you to find answers to certain questions in life. It will also allow you to find your direction on which the life should unfold in the future. As we all get caught up in our daily mundane – routine work, we may miss the opportunity of looking into our inner soul and figure as to what we should do next. Meditation, yoga, reading, walking on the beach, jogging, etc can create this space for yourself. It will recreate your soul and refresh your mind. Find time for yourself. Indulging yourself in everything that comes on your way is not life is all about. It has a deeper meaning and it’s to be found by you. No one else can find it for you. It takes a lot of courage to become who you really are. Never give up…
