A committee appointed to look into the incident that took place between two groups of students at Ragama Medical Faculty hostel premises has recommended that a specific programme be set up to ensure the safety of university staff and students and prevent unauthorised entry into the hostel premises.

The incident took place after a group of outsiders got involved in an incident where two groups of students clashed inside the hostel premises on February 1.

A committee chaired by Minister Keheliya Rambukwella was appointed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to look into the incident. The report was handed over to President on Thursday.

Ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Ramesh Pathirana were the other members of the committee.

The committee has investigated the relevant incident and related reports and prepared a report containing facts and recommendations, the President’s office said.

According to reports, the incident was not a deliberate and intentional act but an irresponsible act of third and fourth year students.

According to the report, the students involved in the incident were arrested, produced in court and then released on cash and personal bail after they admitted they had committed certain acts. The son of Arundika Fernando were arrested along with his friends without delay and legal action has been taken.

The committee noted that Arundika Fernando did not have any knowledge or influence in the incident.
