The Asian International School held its Inter-House Drama Competition on the 15th of February, at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. Presented by the school’s Drama Club, the event was staged after a hiatus of 2 years, and was a roaring success.

Following the progression of dramatic history, the 2022 competition’s theme was modern drama— having dealt with Greek Tragedies and Shakespeare in previous years. Excerpts were performed from plays by significant modern playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Bertolt Brecht, Arthur Miller and Frederico Garcia Lorca. Four houses presented a 20-minute excerpts from their assigned script. Each performance was prefaced by an introduction to the piece performed and an appreciation of each play, in terms of its contribution to modern dramaturgy.

Garnet House’s performance of ‘Mother Courage and her Children’ stole the show, coming in first place. Directed by AIS Alumni Nethmi Gunesekera and Joshua Weerasingham, the performance stirred the audience with its harsh reminder of the capitalisation of war and conflict. Sapphire House, in second place, moved the audience with an unnerving excerpt from Miller’s ‘The Crucible’, reminding us of the pertinence of fear-mongering even today in the 21st century. Amethyst House performed an interesting interpretation of ‘Waiting for Godot’, while Topaz House asked important questions concerning gendered stereotypes with their excerpt from ‘The House of Bernarda Alba’.

Shria Nair walked away with the award for Best Female Portrayal with her role as Mother Courage, having won the same award in 2020. Best Male Portrayal was an award shared by Stefan Feizal and Ravija Jayawardene, while Best Supporting Male Portrayal went to Smayan Nair, and Thiumi Gunasekera won Best Supporting Female Portrayal.

The event was judged by notable theatre practitioners and educators, Marissa Jansz, Bimsara Premaratne and Ashini Fernando. The judges’ comments were extremely positive as they congratulated the houses on their interpretations and talent, commending the school for supporting the Arts despite these trying times.  The event was staged in accordance with all safety and health regulations, and was supported by the AIS student body, their family and friends.
