Special Needs Education at The Open University of Sri Lanka

The Department of Special Needs Education (SNE) of the Faculty of Education of the Open University of Sri Lanka has been conducting the Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Education programme (PGDSNE) since 2008 in  the English medium and since 2010 in all three mediums. This programme recognises the importance of improving professional competencies of teachers and teacher educators in order to expand the capacity of the school system to respond to the educational needs of all students.

The Department offers this programme to provide a firm base for teachers and teacher educators by expanding their knowledge, skills, attitudes, and confidence to work with diverse needs of learners.

This PGDSNE  is offered in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna and Batticaloa Regional Centres and Hatton, Ampara, and Gampaha Study Centres.

This is a SLQF Level 8 programme. Duration of the programme is a fifteen (15) months. The principal goal of this programme is to deal comprehensively with all aspects of special needs education and to develop professional knowledge and skills of graduate teachers and other graduates who are in the field of special needs education.

The specific objectives of the programme is enable the participants to perform effectively as teachers by,

  • Enhancing knowledge and understanding of inclusive education.
  • Becoming familiar with accepted theories and practices related to special needs education.
  • Developing positive attitudes in working with children with special needs.
  • Developing skills needed for practical work in special needs education.
  • Sensitizing to current issues related to the specific needs of individuals and groups placed in special needs circumstance; and
  • Strengthening capability in interacting with parents of children with special needs.

The entry qualification of students’ is should be bachelor’s Degree of minimum three years duration from a recognised University or any other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka and

Should be a Teacher or a Principal of a recognised school or an In-service Teacher Adviser or a Teacher Educator or an Officer in the Sri Lanka Educational Administrative service or a full time Lecturer (Universities, Colleges of Education, Technical Colleges and Teacher Training Colleges) or a Government Teacher Centre Manager or a Project Officer (National Institute of Education) .
