This week, the Presidential Secretariat appointed two new Vice Chancellors to state universities based on the names nominated by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah was appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, while Prof. Nilanthi De Silva was appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

Prof. Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah is a Mathematics Professor. He assumed his duties on Friday. He is the ninth Vice Chancellor of the university and takes over from Competent Authority  Emeritus Prof. Kathirkamanathan Kandasamy.

Prof. Nilanthi De Silva is a Senior Professor attached to the University of Kelaniya’s Medical Parasitology Unit.

Until now, seven of the country’s 15 state universities did not have Vice Chancellors and the positions had remained vacant for months, pending new appointments.  For the selection of new Vice Chancellors, the UGC had introduced a new points-based system, based on academic and professional qualifications, along with an interview.
