The University Grants Commission (UGC) has drawn up plans to set up a separate university for nurses due to the high demand for qualified and trained nurses.

UGC Vice Chairwoman Janitha A. Liyanage told the Education Times the UGC plans to enroll around 3,000 nursing students to follow a degree course in nursing.

She said students from the and students who had passed the Advanced Level exams would be eligible to enter the university. Discussions had already been held with the Health Ministry about the programme. The 17 existing Nurses Training Colleges would also be upgraded, the UGC Vice Chairwoman said.  There had been a high demand for trained and qualified nurses over the years, within Sri Lanka and in foreign countries too. - PCK
