Graduates of JCU’s Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery are well-respected professionals, highly regarded for their knowledge to meet the medical needs of northern Australia’s tropical populations. As a medical university, JCU aspires to what the World Health Organisation calls a “socially accountable medical education—a medical school accepting its obligation to direct education, research and service to priority health concerns of communities it has a mandate to serve.”

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery is a six-year, full-time undergraduate degree. It is the only full medical course offered in northern Australia.

Career opportunities

CU graduates are highly regarded as work ready, with a strong foundation in biomedical and social sciences, and extensive clinical experience. After graduation you can register to work as an intern in Australia or New Zealand. Your internship takes one year, after which you can progress to further training in a chosen specialisation, such as general practice, surgery, obstetrics, anaesthetics, or emergency medicine, for example.

Course highlights

Our supportive, small group teaching approach is highly effective. You will benefit from modern facilities, extensive clinical training and a superior learning location.

Your clinical placements take place in a range of locations, and start in your first year of study. Hands-on experience continues throughout your degree. In Year 4 you will be based in either Townsville or Cairns, and in Years 5 and 6 you will experience our clinical school sites in Cairns, Mackay, Darwin and Townsville, plus extended placements in small rural and remote communities.

Course overview

You’ll gain expertise across multiple clinical and biological fields including anatomy, infection control, disease prevention control, biochemical processes, health promotion and medical ethics. You will graduate from JCU with skills and knowledge in:

The distinctive needs of northern Australia’s tropical populations

Distance and remote delivery of medicine

Tropical medicine

Medical care in rural hospital and community settings

Medical experiences and facilities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Former students in the MBBS have had high levels of satisfaction with teaching quality and the course experience (96% Course Satisfaction, 2013 National University Experience Survey).

Successful applicants require Hepatitis B immunisation, current Queensland Provide First Aid and CPR certificates plus Suitability to Work with Children (Blue Card) and an Australian Federal Police check before undertaking placement. It is recommended that these requirements be completed by the end of your first semester/teaching period.

IELTS: Overall 7.0 (7.0 in three components and 6.5 in one component)

Academic Entry Requirements

Minimum 3.4 in Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) – 3 A’s.
