The Government will spend Rs 8,000 million for buildings for a fully equipped Faculty of Healthcare Sciences at the Eastern University.
A 50-acre plot of land in Pillarady has been selected for the project. The main funding of around Rs 5,000 million is a loan from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) while the balance, about Rs 3,000 million, is from the Government.

In addition to the buildings, a loan from Austria will fund the required medical equipment. Under the proposed plans the University would have 100 students in its Medical Faculty and 70 following the Nursing Degree among others. The Faculty of Healthcare Sciences commenced in 2004 and its studies were conducted in a former paddy store.

The new project envisages to have its own administrative building, departments, lecture halls, labs, auditoriums, library, hostel facilities, sports complex and grounds, and staff quarters. - Damith Wickremasekara
