The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has written to President Maithripala Sirisena and the Public Service Commission (PSC) requesting them to look into the failure of the Ministry of Education (MoE) to fill key positions in the Education Administrative sector.

The CTU has pointed out that ninevacancies, including Sports & Physical Training Instructor, Primary Schools Education Director, Private Schools Education Director, Aesthetic Studies Education Director, Estate Sector Education Director, Language & Human Resources Director, Teacher transfer & Non-formal Education Director have not been appointed for a considerable length of time.

In addition, it said that proper appointments have not been made to seven more positions, including Additional Secretary (Establishment), Education Director (Technical) -Science Faculty Commission, Education Director- Research, Education Director- Human Resources and Education Director-–Teacher Training School.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said that the MoE has turned a blind eye and ignored filling the vacancies, which is contributing to the deterioration of the Education system in the country.

The CTU is also of the view that the MoE intends to fill these vacancies with political appointees of the Minister.
