The administration of the University of Kelaniya (UoK) has decided to re-open 3 Faculties on Monday, June 3, after the students agreed to abide by the security arrangements provided by the UoK, a senior UoK official said.

UoK Media Director Vijayananda Rupasinghe said that, except for the Medical Faculty, they closed all the other Departments on Thursday (23), as a group of students did not adhere to the security arrangements.

“The UoK re-opened on May 28 when the students disagreed about the Faculties being out of bounds during the night, claiming they needed to study and engage in non-academic activities after 9 pm, and remained within the UoK, despite UoK Security requests to vacate,” he said.

Mr Rupasinghe said the students of the Faculties of Science, Commerce & Management and Computer & Technology have agreed to the new Security measures and, therefore, they have been requested to report at the UoK hostels on Sunday, to resume their studies after Monday.

Meanwhile, the Convener of the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Maheel Bandara Dehideniya said they condemn the closure of the UoK.

He said that normalcy should return to the universities and students allowed to study and engage in co-curricular and union activities at late hours.

“The Government is trying to stop union activities in the guise of security of universities,” he said.
