Rahula past pupils offer scholarships to 77 undergrads
View(s):The Scholarship Trust of the Rahula College Matara Past Pupils Association (Colombo Branch) recently offered 77 scholarships to undergraduates who come from families with an annual income of less than Rs. 2,000,000. Each scholarship is worth Rs. 12,000.
Scholarships worth Rs. 6,000 each were also awarded to 44 students who passed the Year Five examination, the GCE Ordinary Level examination, and the GCE Advanced Level examination and to those who excel in extra curricular activities.
Since 1975, the Trust has offered 1,877 scholarships worth above Rs. 27 million. Under the Foster Parents Scheme started in 2012 , needy students are given a monthly grant of Rs.1,000 until they complete the GCE Advanced Level.
At the event held to distribute scholarships, distinguished Past pupils Dr. (Eng) Keerthi Devendra and Engineer Piyatissa M. Liyanage took part as chief guest and the guest of honour. Principal Francis Welege, former principal A.H. Godavitharana, School Development Society Secretary Mr. Mahanama and Trust Secretary Nandsena Bambaravanage addressed the gathering.
Dr. Devendra, who served in the Aero Engine Division of Rolls Royce UK, provided career guidance advice to the undergraduates. The event also included a cultural programme.
