Police have recorded a statement from the wife of an inmate of Kuruwita prison, who suffered broken limbs, after being assaulted by prison officials, alleging she verbally abused her husband’s attackers.

Dilsha Kumari was summoned to the Kuruwita Police on Friday and asked to make a statement, after Prisons officials complained she abused them upon learning her husband has been severely beaten up while in remand custody.

The detainee, Jeewananda Rajapaksa had a broken hand and leg after he was assaulted while in prison on Dec.28. He received treatment at the Ratnapura General Hospital and was later transferred to the Kegalle Prison where he is undergoing further medical treatment.

Rajapaksa is in custody on suspicion of possessing explosives, but no charges have been framed against him.

Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera who heads the Committee for Protecting the Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) alleged that no action has been taken so far against the prison officials who beat up an inmate, while the wife of the victim is being subject to harassment.

“The inmate’s wife was angry and upset at the plight of her husband and voiced her frustrations, as a result she is being subject to harassment,” he said.
