The retired High Court judge who conducted the probe on the Meethotamulla garbage dump tragedy has been awaiting a call from the President’s Office for more than a month to hand over his report.

Retired Judge Chandradasa Nanayakkara, who headed the one-man Presidential Committee, said he completed the report in November and, early last month, wrote to the President’s office seeking an appointment with the President to hand over the report. But he has not received a reply so far.

On April 26, last year, two weeks after the tragedy on National New Year’s day, President Maithripala Sirisena appointed the retired judge to investigate the tragedy. The probe lasting seven months heard evidence from more than 30 witnesses.

The President’s Media Director, Dharmasri Bandara Ekanayake, told the Sunday Times that he was unaware that Mr Nanayakkara had sought an appointment. He said he would look into the matter

More than 30 people died and about 100 houses were damaged or destroyed when the garbage dump collapsed on April 14, last year.
