Modern Pentathlon is an Olympic sport that comprises of five events: fencing, freestyle swimming, show jumping, a final combined event of pistol shooting, and a cross-country run. The sport has been a core sport of the Olympic Games since 1912, and since 1949 an annual World Championship has been held.

Originally the competition took place over four or five days; however in 1996 a one-day format was adopted in an effort to be more audience-friendly. However, modern pentathlon, despite it’s long Olympic history, has had to justify its inclusion in the modern Olympic Games several times. On February 11, 2013 in Lausanne, the IOC confirmed modern pentathlon once again as one of the 25 core sports of the Olympic programuntil 2020. The governing body, Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), administers the international sport in more than 90 countries and all the continents of the world.

Modern Pentathlon sport is a new sport to Sri Lanka and our prime objective is to introduce Modern Pentathlon (MP) effectively to become a popular sport amongst youth while giving a message to build their future consisting of a healthy body and a strong mind.

The International Federation for Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) has decided to accelerate the development of the sport through an event named the Laser Run City Tour. This event is a combination of two of the five sports in Modern Pentathlon, running and shooting. The Modern Pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka (MPFSL) is introducing this event locally for the first time. Our athletes can use this event as a stepping-stone to participate in the Olympic Sport of Modern Pentathlon. It will also be a fun event for amateurs, kids and parents to enjoy a new experience of running and shooting combined.

The specialty of this sport is that it could be used together with any other sport to enhance body and mind balance.

The focus will be to introduce this sport to Sri Lanka and create awareness amongst athletes as well as the general public. The event will only have running and shooting will make it easy for many to take part. It brings happiness and health to the City where you organize the event. Running and shooting with harmless, environmentally friendly laser pistols, is made in terms of bringing sport and youth recreation together.

Ultimate goal is to identify the new talent through fun and leisure game to build up high performance athletes in future.

The event has been listed on UIPM world event calendar. UIPM is directly involved in promoting and giving publicity and recognition worldwide. UIPM has provided the LRCT result template to submit all results and facilitates in issuing a UIPM ID number to each competitor, which is a competing license for the future. All competitors will be enlisted to world rankings based on submitted results considering the best Laser Run time for each competitor.

MPFSL is striving hard to create the opportunity for young energetic individuals in Sri Lanka to be a part of the sport in a test of stamina, which provides great results, and those selected be able to compete in the international arena. MPFSL has been progressing well, and Modern Pentathlon sport is developing at a high pace in the country.

MPFSL is the National governing body which is affiliated to UIPM , the world governing body of the Modern Pentathlon Sport. MPFSL is also registered under Ministry of Sport – Sri Lanka and affiliated to National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka.
