SriLankan Airlines Chairman Ajith Dias and Chief Executive Officer Suren Ratwatte held a news conference this week at their plush office at the World Trade Centre.

A journalist asked what action the airline management took on the J.C. Weliamuna probe on the national carrier’s activities during the previous regime. “It is not within our purview,” replied Mr. Dias.

Another asked what action was being taken against a female flight attendant who had then been assigned to work for Hambantota District Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa. “Why are you raising personal issues?” shot back Mr. Dias.He told journalists the news conference was held to discuss issues related to recovering airline’s losses and not “personal issues.”

Recently, a pilot who had masterminded a pornographic video clip of himself and a female flight stewardess which later went viral was told by his bosses not to worry about it as it was a “personal matter”. Little or nothing seems official at SriLankan. Most things are turning out to be ‘personal’.
