A hellhole , not a hospital

Conditions at the Dambulla Base Hospital are atrocious. It suffers from a shortage of staff, hospital equipment and inadequate sanitation.

The situation is so bad  that patients complain their very lives are at risk.

The drainage system has collapsed. Many of the toilets within the hospital itself are overflowing, and emit an obnoxious odour which pervades the premises. The toilet pits are overflowing…

Many of the patients admitted require surgical treatment. Many more are admitted with open wounds caused by accidents, armed attacks etc. Most of those unfortunate enough to end up at this hospital are forced to lie on the floor -on mats and/or on pieces of cardboard and other oddments such as pieces of plastic- as there is a chronic shortage of hospital beds.

The wards are filthy and it isn’t uncommon to see dogs and other animals freely roaming the corridors and even among the patients.

The shortage of hospital staff  requires patients and their families undertake duties normally assigned to hospital staff.

For example, wheelchair-bound patients have to depend on their families to perform ablutions and wheel them in and out of wards.

Hospitals officials cited staff shortages as the cause for most problems. They added financial constraints prevented them recruiting necessary staff  and said they were helpless to change the situation.
