The Government has declared a no-go zone for fishermen off the Negmobo lagoon in view of sand mining operation required for the International Financial City (Port City) project.

Megapolis and Western Development Ministry Secretary Nihal Rupasinghe said they had sought the assistance of the Defence Ministry to provide security for the site from where sand mining would begin soon.

The request came after at least 11 buoys to mark the location of the sand mining area had gone missing.

An area of about 50 Sq Km has been declared as the no-go-zone to extract sand for three years.

Mr. Rupasinghe said that fishermen had been warned that entry into the pathway of the machinery could be dangerous as the machines were operated automatically.

“We have appealed to fishermen not to be instigated by various groups and not to sabotage the operation,” he said.
