An international conference to bring the global community together to tackle the world’s biggest wildlife challenges and opportunities took place in Johannesburg, South Africa last month.

The event was also important to Sri Lanka as the country was proposing that a variety of sharks, the Thresher Sharks, be included in the endangered species list.

A Wildlife Conservation Department delegation attended the event, but at the time of the presentation proposing that the species of shark be included in the endangered list, our delegates were not present.

Wildlife and Sustaintable Development Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera was present at the event, but no officials were at the conference to make the presentation and argue Sri Lanka’s  case.

Coming to Sri Lanka’s aid were some foreign delegates who made the presentation. Where on earth was the Sri Lankan delegation?
