The National Institute for the Care of Paraplegics will mark the International Day of the Disabled which falls on Thursday (December 3) by distributing hampers including dry rations and food items to deserving paraplegics from Kuruwita and Weliweriya.

A sale of compost fertiliser, coconut shell handicrafts, woodwork, packed condiments, stitched items, patch-work, vegetables, plants, electrical items and envelopes produced by paraplegics in the Kandy district will also be on sale at Wesley Hall, Yatinuwara Veediya, Kandy.

These people living in remote areas of the district will be provided transport to and from Kandy town as well as breakfast and lunch on this day.

The National Institute will also join the walk being held in support of the disabled from the Fort Railway Station to the President’s Office on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The National Institute is currently headed by its Kandy President Marie Tennakoon and Colombo President Siromi Unamboowe Udurawana. The parent body in Kandy has 300 members and Colombo 60 members.

The vision of the National Institute is to give a better life to all persons with disability brought about by an injury to the spinal cord.

It has built houses, toilets and ramps providing access to homes, supplying medical equipment and also has facilitated education, self-employment, job opportunities and psychosocial support.
