The Sri Lanka Association of Geriatric Medicine established in 2014 held its Annual Academic Sessions on November 19 and 20 on the theme ‘Ensuring dignity in the silver age’ .

The World Health Organisation Representative to Sri Lanka, Dr. Jacob Kumaresan was the Chief Guest at the inauguration held at the Galadari Hotel on November 19.

The model of multi-disciplinary care which not only includes doctors but also physiotherapist, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and social workers was demonstrated at a pre-congress session organised by the neurology, rheumatology and orthopaedic teams on November 19, while delegates from Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore, India and France delivered guest lectures at the academic sessions the following day, both events being held at the Waters Edge Hotel.

The many complex issues pertaining to the older patient, the correct approaches to be taken when arriving at clinical decision-making, ethical issues encountered in day-to-day practice in resource-poor settings and legal implications of difficult and sensitive decisions were discussed.
