St. Joseph’s College stomped on to a huge 110-run victory over St. Benedict’s College in a All-Island Under-17 Division I game played at Kotahena.

Winning the toss and batting first St. Joseph’s were given a sound start with openers Revan Kelly (41) and Dario Dasanayake (19) adding 61 runs for the first wicket. The innings was propelled by a 119 run stand for the 4th wicket between Jehan Daniel (77) and Nipun Sumanasinghe (64). Daniel struck four sixes and 8 boundaries in his quick-fire knock. Skipper Dinith Basnayake was the pick of the bowlers claiming 5 for35 with his off spin for the Bens.

In reply the Benedictines struggled to score freely as they were restricted by Josephian Spinners Aminda de Alwis (3/34) and Jehan Fernandopulle (4/29) who bowled a tidy line and length and shared seven wickets to eventually bowl out the hosts for 165 in the 50th over. Once again it was Skipper Dinith Basnayake (57) who fought a lone battle to top score for the Benedictines, with a well compiled half century.

St. Anne’s in third win

St. Anne’s College Kurunegala gained their third win in the ongoing All-Island Inter Schools Under-17 Singer Trophy Cricket tournament by defeating St. Thomas’ College Matale by 50 runs at Matale on Friday.

St. Anne’s won the toss and elected to bat first, made 232 in 49 overs. Skipper Vanitha Wanninayaka top scored for them with a fluent 72, the only fifty in the match. St. Thomas’ in reply posted 182 in 32.1 overs. Spinner Piyumal Sinhawansa did most of the damage by capturing 4 for 42 for the winners
