the United States of America. Symons (72) was accompanied by his son Marlon, who is 50-years of age and a citizen of the USA. The Symons ended the race among top 500 finishers in the first bunch, after spending two hours and 20 minutes on course. The race was held May 3 with a massive participation of over 30,000 cyclists from all parts of the world.

“I was awarded the most veteran participant of the event. I first took part in this event in 2001 and it’s great to be in good shape to be on course even after 14 years. I, along with my son Marlon represented the Staten Island Cycling Club of New York,” a thrilled Symons stated.

Symons, a former national champion, who has represented Sri Lanka at international level but at his age of 72, he, maintains his good shape to compete still at local events. He resides in Ratnapura, 87 kilometres away from Sri Lanka’s capital of Colombo and Symons rides all the way from his hometown to events on his cycle. But for the 64-kilometre event held in USA which takes place through all five of New York’s boroughs and across five major bridges, Symons had to save his earnings of years.

“This was the third occasion I visited the USA. First time, I saw it and made my mind to take part in the second time I visit. Then after I accomplished my wish in 2001, I wanted to do another time. So I did a lot of savings and made the trip possible this year. I’m really eager to take part next year too, if health and finance permit,” Symons stated with hope.

This event initiated on June 12, 1977 as the Five Boro Challenge with about 250 participants on an 80-mile course. After the then New York City Mayor, Ed Koch promoted the idea of a city-wide bike tour on a shortened distance, the event was widely welcomed globally. The next event will be ridden on May 1 in 2016. – NA
