St. Mary’s Negombo celebrates Sports meet on a grand scale

The annual sports meet of St. Mary’s College, Negombo was held at the college grounds on February 16, 2015. Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando was the Chief Guest.

The Principal of St. Mary’s College, Father Rector Jayantha Wickramasinghe, along with Reverend Father Clement Rozario, parish priest of the Grand Street Church, Reverend Father Clarice Gabriel, rector of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 1, Reverend Father Jude Nicholas, parish priest of Maharagama, Father Rajula Nilantha, assistant parish priest of Thoppuwa, Kochchikade, Reverend Sisters Sudharshani and Antoinette of Christ King College, Pannipitiya, the President of the school Old Boys’ association, Secretary of the School Development Society, Provincial Councilor Royce Vijitha, Negombo Municipal Council member Dr. Henry Rozairo, Additional Zonal Director of Education- Negombo Chaminda Fernando, Divisional Director of Education- Negombo Andrew Micheal, Deputy Director Sports Gamini Fernando and the school Deputy Principals Franklin Gomez and Sheran Lalantha were in attendance at the event.
In addition to the usual events such as 100m and 200m, the event also featured the annual two drill displays by the primary section, Grades 2 and 3 and Grades 4 and 5. This year, the sports meet also featured a gymnastic display by the students of Grades 6, 7 and 8 as well as karate display and the Western band display.

The event was organised with the combined efforts of the 2015 Sports Captain Master Naveen Shavindra, the Sports Vice Captain Master Tishan Eranga, the Head Perfect Master Rehan Gunawardena, the Perfect of Games, Mrs. Nilanthi Saparamadu along with the school prefects. The Grade 13 prefects erected two thoranas near the main entrance and the stage.

The four House teams at St. Mary’s are as follows: Alles House, Breton House, Cazuguel House and Sebastian House. Cazugeul House, whose Master-in charge is Aruna Abewardena, with Master Tishan Eranga acting as the House Captain and Master Ashan Vinod as the House Vice Captain, won the championship gift this year. Masters Nimeshan Maduranga and Supun Dilshan acted as the House Sport Captain and House Vice Sport Captain respectively.

Sebastian House, with Merius Fernando acting as the Master-in Charge, with Masters Dineth Mayantha, Dasun Chanaka, Dulantha Srimal and Pradeep Naddeshan acted as the House Captain, House Vice Captain, House Sport Captain and House Vice Sport Captain respectively, was the runner-up while Alles House, with Ruwantha Sovis as the Master-in Charge, Masters Roshan Aidrian, Mohammad Shahid, Dinesh Shehan and Chanaka Madushan acting as the House Captain, House Vice Captain, House Sport Captain and House Vice Sport Captain respectively, place third overall. With Master-in Charge Indika Vinod, Masters Russell Vansandren, Nalin Dhananjaya, Ahmad Faizal and Isuru Hansana acting as the House Captain, House Vice Captain, House Sport Captain and House Vice Sport Captain respectively, headed the Breton House.
The special challenge trophy for Academic and Competency was win by the Alles House while the Athletic and Sports challenge trophy was win by Cazuguel House.

The best march-past squad was produced by Breton House with Alles House, Sebastian and Cazuguel Houses occupying the second, third and forth positions respectively.
