Professor Arjuna de Silva, the Chairman of Sri Lanka Anti Doping Agency (SLADA) has been invited to deliver the keynote speech at the World Congress of Science and Medicine in Cricket (WCSMC) 2015. The WCSMC will be held at Luna Park in Sydney, Australia coinciding with the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 from March 23 to 27.

The objective of the WCSMC is to present and discuss the most recent research findings in cricket science and increasing knowledge in the areas of clinical management and performance enhancement as applied to all the major disciplines of cricket including biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, nutrition, sports psychology, and coaching science. The gathering will also encourage scientific discussions on future areas of research, in particular addressing those areas in which understanding is limited, with the view of advancing the game of cricket.

“This conference is held once in four years and I consider it as a good opportunity for Sri Lanka in the perspective of getting to know the latest technology and other aspects like nutrition and bio-mechanism. It’s in cricket that Sri Lanka has achieved the highest in these aspects. This will be a good opportunity for Sri Lanka to make an initiative by sharing the know-how with experts of other countries that are developed,” Professor de Silva told the Sunday Times.

The WCSMC is the premier international conference for cricket research, bringing together the most eminent researchers in the field, as well as world renowned coaches, players and administrators. This year’s keynote speaker, Professor de Silva has been involved in Sri Lanka anti-doping activities for more than ten years and was instrumental in establishing SLADA and introducing new legislation to criminalize trafficking in ban substances.

Sri Lanka is the only country in Asia to have legislation to this effect. Professor de Silva was the key medical provider for the ICC Twenty20 World Championship hosted by Sri Lanka in 2012 and he was the official physician to the Sri Lankan Olympic team at the London Olympics. He becomes the first Sri Lankan to receive an invitation to be the keynote speaker at WCSMC.

Building on the notable successes of the previous congresses held in Shropshire, United Kingdom in 1999, Cape Town, South Africa in 2003, Bridgetown, Barbados in 2007 and Chandigarh, India in 2011, this congress will be a major international event involving participants from countries around the world, including most of the major cricket playing nations. The congress will be held from March 23 to 27 with commendation from International Cricket Council. Professor de Silva will deliver the keynote speech on March 25.
