Pro-government unions at the Bank of Ceylon, People’s Bank and the National Savings Bank have organised a meeting with outsourced workers at the Shalika Hall, Narahenpita,to be held today.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is likely to address the meeting at which these outsourced workers are expected to be offered the choice of being made permanent at the three State banks, union officials said.

In the 2015 Budget, the President who is alsothe Finance Minister proposed that all temporary workers in State institutions, who have served over 180 days, be made permanent. This, however, did not apply to staff supplied by manpower supplying companies, but meant to cover staff hired by the banks themselves on a temporary basis.

A sizable number of employees at the three banks come from external manpower agencies, and are not entitled to benefits enjoyed by other employees, such as leave, pensions, bonus, etc.Unions at the three State banks, since the presidential election was announced, have split in two, with one section supporting the government, while the other remains independent of any party affiliation.
