Jaffna Indian Consulates’ ‘Indian Corner 2013’ maiden certificate awards ceremony

A certificate awards ceremony was organised by the Indian Consulate in Jaffna at Greengrass Hotel on Dec. 28, for the first batch of students who participated at the Carnatic Vocal Music, Violin, Yoga and Hindi classes conducted at “India Corner 2013”.

Northern Province (NP) Gov. G.A. Chandrasiri was the Chief Guest and distributed the certificates to the students and also honoured the teachers. Acting Consul General Shri S.D. Moorthy presided over the function.

More than 200 guests comprising students, teachers, art lovers, consulate officials and invitees were treated to a musical and vocal performance by the students of India Corner.

Mr Moorthy, in his address, recalled the efforts of former Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha to establish the Indian Corner and its joint inauguration by the NP Gov. and the High Commissioner in February 2013.

NP Gov. G.A. Chandrasiri praised the services of the Indian Consulate in the NP. He offered scholarships to exceptional students of Indian Corner to pursue higher studies in fine Arts.

Classes for the next batch of students began on Dec.1, 2014. Mr Moorthy invited Jaffna’s schoolchildren to visit the library at the Consulate’s Indian Corner.

He also requested NP Cultural Centres conducting dance and vocal music training to register with the Indian Consulate, to consider them and to offer opportunities at future cultural events organised by the Consulate.
