Members of the Kandy Bar staged a protest in Kandy town, against the assault on Attorney-at-Law and CPC Member Channa Galappathi in the Nawalapitiya police area by a gang which had arrived in a ‘white’ van and blocked his path at Galpaya. Mr. Galappathi who is alleged to have been severely assaulted, was first taken to the Gampola Hospital, and later transferred to the Kandy General Hospital suffering a broken knee and ankle.
Mr. Galappathi was returning to Kandy after attending a meeting at Kurunduwatte, in the Nawalapitiya police area, in support of the Opposition’s Common candidate Maithripala Sirisena.

Meanwhile, a provincial TV journalist has been allegedly assaulted by Mr. Galappathi’s son.

According to reports, the TV journalist met Mr. Galappathi’s son in the company of a politician, and had requested the politician for a statement on the incident. The politician said he would comply, if all the names of the assailants would be telecast over the network, to which the TV journalist declined to give any assurances. Mr. Galappathi’s son had then said that if this could not be done, he could go away, and pushed the TV journalist.
Police are conducting inquiries on both incidents.
