During the just-concluded festive season, the police launched a campaign aimed at averting road accidents and fatalities, police spokesman Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Times.

The focus of the campaign carried out from December 24, to 26, December 29 to 30 and January 1- 2, was to detect motorist who drove under the influence of liquor and violated traffic rules, he said.

SSP Rohana said 752 people were apprehended up to 30.12.2014 for driving under the influence of liquor while 92 vehicles were driven by drunken-drivers. The vehicles included, five lorries, two cars, 46 three wheelers, 35 motor cyclists, and 4 other vehicles. Steps would be taken to prosecute the drivers in court, the police spokesman said.

Meanwhile, 1152 people were arrested from January 1 to 2 for driving under the influence of liquor. The detections involved 146 vehicles, he said.
SSP Rohana pointed out that one of the dangerous trends seen in recent road accidents was that pedestrians mainly schoolchildren and elderly people were mowed down while attempting to cross the road. Most of these accidents are hit and run ones, which make it difficult for police to track down the suspects, he added.
