For the development and promotion of Table Tennis in Jaffna, on the request of the President of the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka thirteen (13) Table Tennis tables were presented to thirteen schools in the Jaffna Peninsula by the Chinese Government on the Asia German Sports Exchange Programme at a ceremony held at the Central College, Jaffna on Friday.

Also the distribution of certificates to twenty (20) coaches who have completed Level I coaching programme of the International Table Tennis Federation also took place.

In the early days TT players from Jaffna occasionally came to Colombo to compete in tournaments prior to the start of the internal strife and in between the war when there were peace accords. It was J. Mohan, former Prefect of Games in Jaffna Central College and former Secretary of the Jaffna District Table Tennis Association kept the players motivated and encouraged them to play. After the war the former President and General Secretary of the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka Chandana Perera painstakingly visited Jaffna regularly and conducted many coaching camps in the Jaffna District and conducted the Provincial TT Tournaments and All Island (unranked) Tournaments. The appeals made by the former president to provide equipment and clothing to the children of Jaffna has always been well received, whereby the parents of players in Colombo, Kandy and Ambalangoda have always come forward and assisted the former president in his endeavours. The Northern and Eastern TT Associations were thankful to former National Table Tennis player and Senior Director of the Abans Ltd. P.N. Pestonjee and Dr. Dietmar Doering, Chairman of the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme for coming forward with the required sponsorship for promotion and development of TT in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The Asian German Sports Exchange Programme in collaboration with the Jaffna District TT Association will be conducting the 2nd All Island (unranked) TT Tournament from Friday (19) to Sunday (21) at the Central College, Jaffna Tables.
