Chathulanka Gamage and Hasara Wijayarathne were crowned the sports stars of the year at the 3rd Sports and Co-curricular Activities Awards Ceremony of Vidura College held at the school auditorium in Thalawathugoda. Chathulanka, a Grade 11 student of the school, was awarded the boys’ category of the main prize while Hasara, a Grade 10 student won its girls’ category.

Chathulanka won the main prize for his excellence in chess while Hasara, with her successful performances, had brought glory to her school in badminton. They were among 27 students of Vidura College to win Colours and were among a total of 177 recipients who were felicitated for their contribution to sports during the seasons of 2012 and 2013. The remaining 150 boys and girls received certificates for Excellent Performance.
Gracing the occasion was former Sri Lanka cricket captain and world renowned international cricketer Mahela Jayawardena, whose attendance was inspirational for the young sports stars of Vidura College. During his speech Mahela further motivated the youngsters to pursue on sports activities naming at as an important asset for a student’s growth.

“While I was a student of Nalanda College, I was lucky enough to have the guidance of my teachers and officials. Your present principal, Mr. D.G. Sumanasekera was one of those who gave me motivation. That pushed me to become a successful cricketer and above that what is needed from you boys and girls is to conserve discipline and physical fitness which can make each one of you a mentally tough person,” Mahela told the youngsters at the ceremony.

The event was organised by Vidura College by an organising committee headed by its principal, Sumanasekera. Others in the committee were Hema Gunasekara (Deputy Principal), P.D.W. Jayawardane (Vice Principal), Upali de Silva (Manager of Sports), Sharmain Karunaratne (Sports Coordinator) and Kithsiri Silva (Asst. Manager of Allied Services). A large gathering of students, teachers, parents, distinguished invitees and well wishers were present at the occasion.
