Former Sri Lanka test off spinner Ranjith Madurasinghe was felicitated by the Rotary Club of Kurunegala at Boyagane recently. This felicitation ceremony was for the services rendered by him for Kurunegala cricket during the last three decades.

Madurasinghe began his cricketing career at Maliyadeva College in late seventies. After leaving school turned out for Kurunegala Sports Club in theDaily News Trophy Division III tournament.

With a few other cricket enthusiasts he formed the Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club in 1982. They emerged champions in Sri Lanka Cricket Division III Cricket Tournament in the 1982-83 season and gained promotion to the Second Division.

Madurasinghe made his first class debut for Sri Lanka against Middlesex at Lords in 1988 and represented Sri Lanka in three Tests and 12 one day Limited Over Internationals. Madurasinghe became the first ever Maliyadeva and Kurunegala cricketer to play for Sri Lanka in Test cricket. He also toured to Zimbabwe, India and Pakistan with the Sri Lanka team.

Presently he is the secretary of the Kurunegala District Cricket Association. He Was appointed to the Cricket Interim Committee in 2002, along with two other cricketers – Sudarshana Guruge and Ajith Ekanayake. He also formed the RSA Cricket School in 1996. He also served as a national cricket selector on few occasions.

In all he has played 101 first class matches and has captured 269 wickets with the best figures of 7 for 85. He has also scored 1736 runs.

Army commander Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayaka was the chief guest on this occasion. Incidentally Lt. Gen. Ratnayake is also an old boy of Maliyadeva College and excelled in rugby and athletics during his school days.
