The 87th Clifford Cup Boxing Championship organised by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABA) will begin at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo today. Nearly 200 pugilists in both men’s and women’s categories will compete under 10 different weight categories in the seven-day event which will come to an end next Saturday.

The coveted annual boxing championship will be open for amateur pugilists between the age groups of 19 and 40 who have won at intermediate, open or national level meets. The bouts in men’s category will consist of three rounds with each of them stretching for three minutes. The women’s category bouts will consist of four rounds with each running for two minutes.

The ABA will consider this competition as a selection meet for the forthcoming International Amateur Boxing Association Championships which will be held in October in Kazakhstan. Heavyweights in local boxing, MAS Holdings are the defending champions of the competition in both categories.
