Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ is almost a decade in the making. The director spent years scouting the perfect venue for the film-from Cape Town to Mexico did the production team travel but little did they realise that the perfect setting was right next door all along. They’ve finally found it though-the film is being shot right now in Colombo and various locations around Sri Lanka and Anurag and his team couldn’t be happier.

“It’s been incredibly, unbelievably smooth sailing so far,” was the verdict at a press briefing held last week to announce the commencement of filming in Sri Lanka. “Sri Lanka has been a dream filming location.” The renowned Indian filmmaker already has several critically acclaimed movies under his belt and knows that every good film needs a strong plot, a talented cast and the perfect backdrop. While ‘Bombay Velvet’s’ plot remains a mystery to even Bollywood insiders we do know that the film’s leads will be played by Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, who were also present at the press briefing. The director did hint at the film’s theme, saying it was a tale of “black and white cinema, chronicling the birth of a city that never sleeps.”

“We’re just glad to have finally found a great location to shoot this film,” says Producer Vikas Balal. “We’ve travelled across the world to find parallels to Bombay and Sri Lanka just has that perfect vintage feel to it.” Some scenes have already been shot in Fort, with more scenes to be shot in 30 locations around the country while a considerable chunk of the film will be shot in Sri Lanka’s first tele-cinema village ‘Ranminithenna’ in Tissamaharama.

Actor Ranbir Kapoor was all smiles, saying he was hugely enjoying himself during the filming while Anushka Sharma quipped that this was one of the “cleanest locations” she’s shot in so far. Both actors will be in the island for the next few weeks shooting their scenes for the film, and will be joined by actor Kay Kay Menon. ‘Bombay Velvet’ is set to be released in December 2014.
