Students enrolling in Australian universities through Edlocate – A glimpse of what they chose to study

View(s):

Having operated creditably in Sri Lanka as a leading student agency and an Australian university representative for the past 13 years, the achievements by our alumni is far too many to pen in an article of this nature. What we try to do here are give a selection of our high achievers as guidance to prospective students.

The first ever student of Edlocate to study in Australia Dr. Mahendrarajha Piraveenan who did Computer Systems Engineering as his first degree at the University of Adelaide as a full scholarship winner wanted to be an academic. With a PhD from University of Sydney, he serves as a Lecturer in the university’s Faculty of Engineering & IT – Centre for Complex Systems Research. Since then many deserving students have been awarded scholarships by Australian Universities and they have completed their degrees.

High achieving students continue to be assisted and guided by Edlocate to secure scholarships on offer at universities. In Australia unlike in other countries scholarships are offered by universities strictly on merit. Some of the students who won scholarships for 2013 second semester intake are Sumudu Mallawaarachchi formerly of Musaeus College to follow Bachelor of Science at University of Melbourne, Uthum Fernando of Gateway College Negombo to follow an Honours Bachelor degree in Engineering at Wollongong University and Mereen Morawaththge of Holy Cross Convent, Gampaha to Swinburne University.

There were 4 scholarship winners in the first semester 2013 intake who were enrolled in Australian universities represented by Edlocate – Nithya Fernandopulle of Gateway College, Negombo and Nishika Seresinghe of AIS – both to University of Melbourne, Dinithi Fernando of Sangamiththa College, Galle to Wollongong University and Dhanushka Sanjay Gunasekara of CIS to Queensland University of Technology.

Whilst traditional courses like Engineering, Business and Commerce, Health Sciences are still high in demand from students; we have students who went out of this traditional selection to more specific areas of studies.

Irshard Hameed a young lawyer who served in the Attorney General’s department with an LLM from the Colombo University is reading for his second Masters degree in Law at the University of Sydney’s law school. So is Ms. Erandhi Jayasuriya, who has just joined the Melbourne University’s Law School to read for her Masters. The reason given by both were that these courses meet the high international standards demanded to enter international careers in specialised fields of law.

Nursing is being slowly accepted as a career by young educated students from schools in principal cities. They realise that unlike in developing countries nursing is a respected and a recognised profession in developed countries. Surani Medagamage of Musaeus College entered directly for Bachelor of Nursing at the University of South Australia and Asha Jahnson of Atamia International, Shehani Kekuluwela of Ave Maria Convent and Kasun Thilakarathna of Ananda College will enter the same bachelor degree after following the TAFE South Australia Diploma of Nursing .Thilina Ranaraja of Dharmaraja College, Kandy is determined to be a commercial airline pilot. He joined the Australian National Airline College (ANAC) at the Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne to follow the Commercial Pilots License with Multi Engine/ Instrument Ratings (CPLMEIR) for the Australian license issued by CASA. He will do the Australian license course and the extra flying hours required to be recognised for conversion of his license by the Civil Aviation Authority in Sri Lanka.

With so many past and present students as alumni of Edlocate with tertiary studies obtained in Australia, in so many fields, the counselors can link prospective students with them in order to get additional information that would help in decision making especially with career selection. Meet counselors of Edlocate in the Colombo office (0115219129), Kandy office (0815631583) and Jaffna office (0212228060) for the 2014 semester 1 intake. They could also arrange for special interview sessions with visiting Australian university representatives in September 2013.
