CR & FC’s ‘Red Shirts’ team kept Havelock Park in Raptures on May 4 and 5 with a vintage display of rugby rarely seen, that left spectators overawed, ahead of CR’s League Championship campaign organised by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union.

Over 176 participants representing 16 leading clubs vied for three trophies on offer. Led by Lasintha de Costa, the CR & FC ‘A’ produced good rugby to overcome Air Force 19-0 and Police SC by 48-0 in their Group ‘A’ encounters.

In the semi-final for the Plate Championship, the Red Shirts with enterprising rugby beat Air Force by 19-12 to book a berth in the final where they bulldozed Police SC by 38-0 to clinch the title. Not to be outdone, the CR & FC ‘B’ led by Priyantha Ekanayake put up a spirited display to beat Army SC ‘B’ by 19-12 to win the Shield trophy.

With this display of rugby produced by the Red Shirts, their supporters could expect a league season full of thrills, where CR & FC’s new look team led by Division ‘A’ skipper Ishan Noor is bound to take the game to new heights.
