“Camouflage: Fashion Front Line” organised by the Viru Daru movement took place last Monday, April 29. Senior officers of the Sri Lanka Army, prominent figures of the fashion industry and children of the Viru Daru Society members were among the packed audience at the SLECC.

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was chief guest at the event and Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, President of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch, Manjulika Jayasuriya and Indrani Weeratunga, wife of the Secretary to the President were also present.

“This day has not come to us on a silver platter, but on a path of hard work by a team of individuals who have worked tirelessly with a lot of cooperation and effort,” said president of Viru Daru, Deshanee Jayasuriya. The show presented by the Lanka Institute of Fashion (LIFT) had the country’s scenic beauty as the theme in many collections showcased on the ramp.

The well organised event began with a moment’s silence in remembrance of fallen war heroes followed by the Viru Daru theme song.
The show featured 12 individual designers and two group designers. The opening segment done by a group of 15 celebrated Lipton’s new range of seven tea flavours (Lipton was the platinum sponsor), and the main segment of the night designed by a group of 15 designers had the show’s signature – the Camouflage Collection.

The Camouflage Collection was extremely innovative and the use of the beautiful landscape as the backdrop was well conceived.
A drum fusion of Kandyan, western, eastern as well as African drums done by the Army’s cultural troupe was indeed appreciated by all. Dancers from the Channa Wickramasinghe troupe added more glamour to the fashion show.

The First Lady presented tokens of appreciation to managing director of LIFT, Niroshani Leanage, beautician Ramzi Rahaman and event choreographer Lou Ching Wong for their contribution to the show. Thereafter President of the Viru Daru society, Deshanee Jayasuriya, presented the First Lady with a memento appreciating her presence.
