The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Indonesia celebrated the 60th anniversary of cultural ties between the two countries with a Rukada/ Golek show in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia on Saturday, April 27 in Bandung in the Asian-African Conference building.

The Sri Lanka Mission invited Sulochana Dissanayake who had spent six months in Indonesia studying contemporary art and traditional theatre to stage the show. She was instrumental in bringing over a team of artists such as the renowned low country dancer Dr. Lionel Bentarage (Professor, Visual and Performing Arts University of Colombo), voice artist Upul Alwis and stage manager Thilina Adhikaram, among others for this event.

The Sri Lankan artists linked up with known Indonesian counterparts such as Golek Artist Bhatara Sena in presenting“Mahadena mutta and Golayas” (Wise Fool and Followers) to suit a modern audience incorporating the Indonesian Wayan Golek characters.

The puppet show was preceded by a seminar and panel discussion on “Bilateral Cultural Relations”. The panelists were Deputy Director of Internationalisation and Cultural Diplomacy of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, Restu Gunawan, Observer and Expert on Sri Lanka-Indonesia Cultural Relations Dr. Ibnu Wahyudi, Dr. Philil K Widjaja of the Indonesia Buddhist Association, W.M.S. Bandara, Minister, Sri Lanka Embassy in Jakarta and President of the Association of Sri Lankans in Indonesia Praveen Selvaratnam.
