Edlocate represents 21 Australian universities in the 5 states and the 3 territories. Seven of these 21 universities are the top ones in Australia, internationally ranked and under the “Go8” branding. In New Zealand we represent 2 universities both in the North Island. Of these two, The University of Auckland is internationally ranked within the first 200 universities in the world and is in the same league as the Go8 universities of Australia.

In both countries, the universities are rigorously monitored and audited by authorities with regard to quality of courses they offer and credibility. The student visa schemes are complicated mainly to ensure that only genuine students are enrolled by universities. Due to these reasons the student populations in universities of both these countries consist of students whose prime desire is to study, obtain a good education and qualify as professionals.

Gone are the days especially in Australia that had “any one and every one” with a student visa posing as international students but doing everything other than studying seriously.

Both countries offer international students post study work visa in order to get work experience. Australia is encouraging more genuine international students to undertake tertiary studies in Australian universities at graduate level coupling the studies with post study work visa for minimum 2 years. This newly introduced post study work visa scheme will help students to get work experience in Australia on successful completion of a degree course after studying in Australia for minimum 2 years.

This is a temporary visa and there is no compulsion for students to work in their area of specialisation. However if a student is keen to join the Australian work force on a permanent basis living in Australia then the student need to use these two years to get employment in their field of studies and improve English skills to get a score at level 8 at IELTS.

The new Skills Select Scheme by which international students could obtain permanent residency in Australia depends on a successful EOI application which is mainly based on total points one has.

The more points an applicant has, the chances are higher to succeed to obtain permanent residency and enter the Australian work force.

As for New Zealand the country offers international students the best chance of success with regard to work and live in the country as permanent residents. As explained earlier though Australia offers 2 years post study work visa, there are many difficulties to those without the right skills amongst the skills listed in the Australian Skills Occupation Lists to live and work in Australia on a permanent basis. In New Zealand once a student completes a bachelor degree course the student can seek a post study work visa of 1 year without a job offer and during that year once a job offer is obtained the post study visa could be extended up to 2 years (In some cases up to 3 years) Under the permanent residency regulations in New Zealand, there is no separate skills assessment if one does an acceptable course. There are no points awarded for English and all one requires is an overall score of 6.5 at IELTS to lodge an EOI to be a permanent resident. The point score required for success on the EOI is easily achievable by an international student during the 2 years of post study work visa.

Whilst Edlocate is not primarily advising students on migration criteria, our counsellors are able to give students and parents a clear picture of the post study opportunities in both countries. Students need such vital information to arrive at correct decisions. Contact counsellors of Edlocate at our offices in Colombo (0115219129), Kandy (0815631583) or Jaffna (0212228060) for enrolling in the future intakes. Representative from UNSW – a Go8 university will conduct interviews at Edlocate’s Colombo office on Saturday 04th May from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon
