34th Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2013

After three weeks of progress Thurstan College cricketer Minhaj Jaleel still continues to hold on to the grip of the Most Popular contest of the 34th Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year contest.

Jaleel hopped further to glory as his tally went past the 5400 mark in a matter of three weeks while taking his lead from second placed A.K. Tyron by a massive margin of 2107. Tyron who is the deputy skipper of Richmond College Galle too moved further from last week as his tally too skyrocketed to 3367, by 2819 votes.

St. Peter’s skipper Dushan Hemantha and Trinity’s Dinuka Wickramanayake too surpassed the 1000 mark as they are lodged at the third and fourth positions respectively. Dushan who jumped two places up to snatch Dinuka’s place also received 1725 votes during the concluded week. Among other notable changes from last week are the progresses of Sachin Bulathsinhala of St. Anthony’s Katugastota and Royal College skipper Devin Pathmanathan.

Both Sachin and Devin moved two slots up to be at No.8 and No.10 slots respectively. The battle among the top five contenders can heat up in the coming weeks as well as of those who are in the lower-mid in the list.

Unexpectedly Deshan Dhananjaya’s stronghold in the Emerging category was outsmarted by new entrant Sanju Sharuk of Vidyaloka Kelaniya. Deshan from Rahula Matara who led in the first two weeks slid down to third place after Lahiru Vimukthi of Sri Sumangala Panadura obtained more votes than him to be elevated to second place, a notch up from last week. Prasanna Sujith of Uhana MV moved down to fourth position from second as Bhanuka Manelanga of St. Mary’s Kegalle made the entry to the competition at fifth. Meanwhile the International Schools category for the third week running is solely dominated by Walid Jiffry of Leighton Park who is yet to receive rivalry.

Coupons of the 34th Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2013 will appear on Wijeya Newspaper’s dailies, the Daily Mirror and Lankadeepa and also its weekend English issue, the Sunday Times. Readers will be able to send in as much as coupons in favour of their favourite schoolboy cricketer until the deadline which is May 30.
