I wish to Congratulate Sanath Jayasuriya on his appointment as Chairman of the Selection Committee. As mentioned in the papers, the chairman has said the senior players are essential for the next few years to the Sri Lankan cricket team. However, it is my belief that no cricketer is indispensable and every cricketer to be selected to the national side should be a performer, during the matches or before selection.
If a senior player is not performing, another player who has been performing, or who is expected to perform, should be selected. The Selection Committee should not be guided by outside influence. It is necessary that selectors search for talent and wherever possible give the opportunity for such players to play at the national level. It is high time the Selection Committee does an honest job for the good of the game.
I give this advice since I was also a National Selector and I do hope other Selectors of the past will advise the present selectors.
